This was our first pivot almost ~1y ago. This pivot 1 year ago was the prequel to the version of Perl as we know it today. It was a mix of numbers and gut feel that compelled us to move away from the bookmarking app. Little did we know that we had 7 more pivots coming that same year.
Perl's second iteration of the initial bookmarking direction gets a colorful makeover. You start seeing the elements we keep using throughout several of our apps like $PERL as the in-app points, leaderboard, and gamification.
@ace started using these mockups for the first few weeks of fundraising. Soon after, @peter built a Farcaster-exclusive alpha for us to demo during meetings. Our first round was largely raised pre-product. We filled in the traction gap with the waitlist/launch momentum & qualitative feedback.
Perl's first mockup and mood boards before we even had a name for it. This is when @ace had just met @peter.
@ace: The vibe = the internet is the ocean. and Perl is a valuable bit of information worth bookmarking. how's "bitperl" as the name of this bookmarking app?
@peter: I love it, but let's drop the "bit." just "perl."
This was the second official investor update. Perl was gaining momentum on Farcaster and Twitter, but @peter and @ace started realizing that a pivot might be inevitable. There were dedicated users who loved it, but they only used Perl to bookmark things. They didn't quite come back to our main app enough for us to double down in this direction. It was a combination of gut feel and numbers that got us starting to question whether this was it or not. "We are honestly not feeling the bull's eye moment with the product yet." says it all.
This was the first official investor update after @ace and @peter raised their first funding round for Perl back in 2022. Perl was initially a social bookmarking app. We had no idea we were going to have to pivot 8 times in 2023 til we arrived at Perl as we know it today in 2024.
