There is a fish, known as Mycteroperca bonaci, or black grouper, which, like a chameleon, changes its colors to avoid danger or to strike at a weaker adversary. To Dreiser, the black grouper represents an element of "subtlety, chicanery, trickery," which is also part of the human condition.
