In 1826, Mark Twain published a short story called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. The events of this story take place before the American Civil War in the small town of St. Petersburg. In the preface to the work, the author himself indicates that the main character, Tom Sawyer, is “a combination of the traits of three boys.”
